Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease

چکیده

Rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) is a highly contagious and acute fatal disease of the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), caused by a calicivirus (genus Lagovirus). A similar disease, [caused by a different calicivirus and] termed European brown hare syndrome (EBHS), has been described in the hare (Lepus europaeus). Its aetiological agent is a different species of lagovirus [calicivirus], antigenically related to the RHD virus (RHDV). RHD is characterised by high morbidity and high mortality (70[40]–90%), and spreads very rapidly by direct and indirect transmission. Infection can occur by nasal, conjunctival or oral routes. Transmission of RHD is facilitated by the high stability of the virus in the environment. The incubation period varies from 1 to 3 days, and death usually occurs 12–36 hours after the onset of fever. The clinical manifestations have been described mainly in the acute infection and are nervous and respiratory signs, apathy and anorexia. Clear and specific lesions, both gross and microscopic, are present. There is primary liver necrosis and a massive disseminated intravascular coagulopathy in all organs and tissues. The most severe lesions are in the liver, trachea and lungs. Petechiae are evident in almost all organs and are accompanied by poor blood coagulation. In rabbits younger than 4–5 weeks, the RHDV infection course is subclinical.

Novel bivalent vectored vaccine for control of myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease.

A novel, recombinant myxoma virus-rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) vaccine has been developed for the prevention of myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD). A number of laboratory studies are described illustrating the safety and efficacy of the vaccine following subcutaneous administration in laboratory rabbits from four weeks of age onwards. In these studies, both vaccinated...

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in rabbit haemorrhagic disease.

Seven rabbits experimentally infected with rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus were examined haematologically and histologically. Haematologically, activated partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time were markedly prolonged in the terminal phase of the disease, just prior to death (all the animals died between 27 and 40 hr after inoculation with rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus). There wa...

A single dose immunization with rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus major capsid protein produced in Saccharomyces cerevisiae induces protection.

The gene coding for the major capsid protein (VP60) from rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus was expressed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae under the phosphoglycerate kinase promoter. The recombinant VP60 produced in yeast was antigenically similar to the viral polypeptide as determined with a polyclonal serum. Electron microscopic observation of the recombinant yeast-derived antigen revealed the pres...

Pathogenicity and immunogenicity of native and mutant strains of Pasteurella multocida, the causative agents of haemorrhagic septicaemia

Haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) is a fatal systemic disease of cattle and buffaloes. Some control isachieved with administration of alum-precipitated or oil-adjuvanted killed whole-cell vaccines injectedsubcutaneously. These vaccines, however, provide only short-term immunity and for effective use, theyshould be administered annually. We constructed an aroA attenuated derivative of a Pasteurella ...

Safety evaluation of a recombinant myxoma-RHDV virus inducing horizontal transmissible protection against myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease.

We have recently developed a transmissible vaccine to immunize rabbits against myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease based on a recombinant myxoma virus (MV) expressing the rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) capsid protein [Bárcena et al. Horizontal transmissible protection against myxomatosis and rabbit haemorragic disease using a recombinant myxoma virus. J. Virol. 2000;74:1114-23...

The importance of liver lesions and changes to biochemical and coagulation factors in the pathogenesis of RHD.

RHDV (rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus) is an etiologic factor of RHD (rabbit haemorrhagic disease), which is highly morbid and mortal viral infection of an adult European rabbit. Although three decades have passed since the first outbreak of rabbit haemorrhagic disease, the pathogenesis of RHD has still not been fully elucidated. It is known that RHDV replicates in the liver within the first ...
